Magic vs Science

Sometimes it is easy to see how something can be seen as magic when there is actually science to back it. Let me explain.

Without giving away too much in my upcoming novel….there is a someone in the forest that explains to the main character how the forest is able to take care of itself in most cases. The older, stronger trees are able to help other not so healthy trees heal and survive. Explaining further the ‘magical’ network of life that has kept the forest around longer than anyone can remember.

I had written this scene to sound as amazing and magical as I could make it come across.

The Magic School Bus was on this morning…yes, you heard me. Side note: if you’ve never watched it, you should. It doesn’t matter how old you are, there is  a lot to learn there. Anyway, during this episode they talked about aphids draining energy from trees, the tree signaling bees to come take care of the aphids. Even then the tree was on a downhill slide, so sent out another message through the mushroom network(yes this is a thing) to other trees so that the healthy ones could help heal the one that was damaged by the aphids.

So where I thought I had created this amazing magical network of healing in my forest, it is in fact science. I am not daunted however. First, it was super interesting to learn about this. Second, knowing how the science works will actually help me explain my ‘magical’ properties more. Let’s be honest, unless a horticulturalist reads my novel, there are probably very few who will recognize the science behind this.

Thank you for stopping and happy writing.

  1. Sounds great .E.J. Love the forest/nature elements. I’m not sure if you know, but I was wondering what makes Telekinesis science based. Like you have the ability to pick up object with your mind. Isn’t that more fantasy based?

    1. Thank you for your comments.
As far as I know there is no scientific proof of telekinesis, though there have been many claims. This would be a supernatural ability. I believe in magic but I also believe there are many things in science we have yet to learn.
